Hey folks, here’s a quick rundown on California’s Proposition 50 that’s up for vote today's 2025 special election: What does Prop 50 do? In 2008 Californians passed Prop 11, placing the power of drawing electoral boundaries in the hands of a Citizens Redistricting Commission. Prop 50 puts this power back in the hands of the Democratic-controlled legislature for the next few election cycles (2026, 2028, and 2030). After 2030, the independent commission is put back in charge. Why does this matter? Congressional district lines determine who gets elected in California, and Prop 50 could swing about 5 extra House seats towards the Democrats. The GOP has been busy re-drawing maps in other states, most notably Texas, to their advantage, so California Dems want to fight fire with fire here. Pros: Counteracts what Dems call "Republican gerrymandering" in other states The number of seats Democrats are likely to claim is equal to the number of seats Republicans are likely to gain from the Texas redistricting, so it could be argued this is just preserving the current balance in Congress Temporary measure that’s only for congressional maps (not state legislature) Cons: Undermines California’s independent redistricting commission, a system many loved specifically for being nonpartisan Critics say it’s blatant political power grab by Democrats Republicans and even some moderates think it wrecks trust in fair maps What do we think?
